"Hispanics Love Loud Music"
I'd like to share with you all an interesting exchange I had at work today with a customer. Here's the backstory....
I was standing at the front door helping to seat people when a lady walked in the door and inquired about the band that was setting up on the stage (btw, the band consisted of 4 50 year old white people, a fact kinda important for the story). Here's how the exchange went:
Scooter: Hi, how are you?
Racist McRacerson: Um, Is the band just getting ready to begin or just finishing up?
Scooter: Well, they are setting up, but they aren't scheduled to start to for another hour so if you wanted to eat without the music, you'd have plenty of time.
Racist McRacerson: Oh good. Because I've realized that I hate everything about Maryland!
Scooter: (puzzled, confused, and silent.....silent....silent, not knowing what to say back).
Racist McRacerson: (starting to get kinda nasty and frantic). Well, I just know that they are gonna play a bunch of loud awful music to draw in all the Hispanics with their minimum wage. Thats what they do around here, just fill the place with immigrants. You know that's not how it is in the rest of the country.
Scooter: (again, silent but only momentarily. Although the customer is always right, I personally feel this doesn't extend to the blatantly racist ones. That said, Scooter does not like confrontation and is a bit uneasy.....). I don't think that is the case. I'm sorry but I don't think so. That's not why we have live music.
Racist McRacerson: No, it is. That's the way it is around here.
Scooter: (Silence, kinda done here).
Racist McRacerson: Well i'll just eat somewhere else then (and leaves).
Scooter: Ok, whose next?
So a couple thoughts about this I'd like to get feedback on?
1). Why would someone that hates on Hispanics come to a tex mex restaurant? I can only think of it as a "hate the person, love the food." The Hispanic equivalent of the gay version: "Hate the sin, love the sinner"
2). Who says this kind of shit in public? I mean have your opinions on immigration, but keep the blatantly racist crap to yourself.
3). If this woman is not from the area, where has she been going in Maryland where loud music is blared in order to attract the minimum wage illegals?

I say because biggots are generally ignorant fools. A few things to point out, however. Hispanic is an awfully generic term. And, most illegal Mexican immigrants aren't too terribly interested in TexMex cuisine. There are a few reasons for this: "we" don't pay them enough to afford it, TexMex food is not the same as Mexican food and they, too, don't like biggots.

Sometimes, I'd rather hear it. That way you know very clearly who to stay away from.

Since I haven't lived in Maryland in more than 5 years, I don't know the answer to your question. However, I know she's not from south Florida. We don't have too many Mexican immigrants here, but we have boat loads (no pun intended) of other "Hispanics". The vast majority of them are Cuban and therefore not illegal thanks to crazy Mr. Castro. There are also quite a number of Puerto Ricans. In my experience the Puerto Rican population is the most likely to play music very, VERY loud. I have never seen the music used to "call" others to rally, though. And, well, here's a shocker - Puerto Ricans are full fledged red blooded Americans! I betcha your near-patron didn't realize that.

Scooter, you idiot. Clearly you know nothing about business. The only way a business can survive is to attract the clientele with the least amount of disposable income. First you get the minimum wage earners, then come the homeless. It pure economics.

I hate to tell you, Scooter, but I don’t think the Mexican Shanty town in Twinbrook can hear the music at the Silver Spring Austin Grill and will, therefore, not be attracted by it. You are neglecting a serious customer base.

As someone who employs a large number of Hispanic day laborers, I’ve found they are too busy working three jobs our sorry American asses don’t want to support their families in El Salvador to have much time for live music.

I'm thinking of starting a band named "Oye Todos Pobres." We would sing songs about OSHA violations and be the new voice of the working poor. Sounds like Maryland is ripe for that sort of vibe. Incidentally, does anyone have an oversized guitar and six sombreros?

I have 1 sombrero, but I think my dad has a bunch of guitars. I have a feeling that if you got that band together, Scooter could get you a gig at the Austin Grill. Work on that B. Gay. I could help you write some of the songs. Maybe we could get David "The Hoff" to produce the videos? Think about it.
