Good Times Blog P.S.A #4
This is P.S.A. number 4 reminding you that if you haven't voted yet to get out there now and do your civic duty:Lulu and Jenny are faced with the choice of Ben Cardin or Michael "I pretend not to be a republican shill but really am" Steele (No Brainer); Martin O'Malley or Bob "I like to falsely paint myself as a moderate even though I don't even support gay families making medical decisions for each other" Ehrlich (um, no brainer).
Captain Adventure, D, Jackie and Others have the honor of casting a vote against Senator George "Macaca" Allen (Lucky).
Even our friend Ritchie, who I don't even think knows this blog exists (poor sod) is voting in a competitive race in Tennessee.
Of course, if you are a resident of the District of Columbia like myself and Fumbles, by all means get out there and vote. There are a bunch of already determined races or positions that hold no power that need your vote. Adrian Fenty is running against some guy whose name I don't remember. And Eleanor Holmes Norton is running unopposed for a position in Congress that has no power (by power I of course mean vote). Oh and don't forget the Board of Ed.
Again just a friendly reminder that over half a million Americans are getting the shaft today, and every two years in November where they are reminded that although they pay federal taxes, they have no influence or representation in congress. "Good Times".

I'm waiting to have my cocktail until I know there's a reason to celebrate... or to drown myself in self-pity that my state is, at the very least, leaning towards more of a purple-ish hue than the true blue that it has been for oh-so-long. I'm hoping for the former and not the latter... BTW, Caroline came to the polls with me today and slept thru the whole thing. I am sure that she would have gotten a kick out of the electronic screens (she stares at computers and t.v. when they're around...) had she been awake. They even gave her an "I Voted/Yo Vote" sticker. I say "Thank-you Democrats" for the translation - if the Republicans had their way, the sticker would read "If you can't read this, you should go back to where you came from. Oh, and by the way, I voted."

Interesting aside: a "Meredith Mensen" was interviewed coming out of a Rockville, Maryland polling place on NPR's All Things Considered today.
Mad props to Jenny for bringing Caroline to the polls. My parents used to let me "pull the lever" (back when votes counted) and now I'm addicted! I'd vote every day if I could. But, since I can't, I just vote a couple of times a year and talk about it the rest of the days.
The nature and volume of my alcohol consumption will also be determined by the election outcome...unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor. My fam actually has a lot riding on this one.

I hear ya Cap. You may have a D senator, but you still don't have several basic civil rights. It's so sad that Allen just won't let go. I'm anxious for this one to end...appropriately...
And, err, uh, a rainbow confederate flag? I don't know what to do with that.
Side note: I'm a bad friend. I should have called captain adventure long ago. THANK YOU for the heads up about the moonlight sail. Explanation is complicated; but bottom line, their call to you reaffirms that they are a stupid and worthless voluteer organization. Think, people! THINK!

It is like Christmas...except for the fact that Virginia voters apparently think it is a good idea to use the bill of rights to restrict rights. But, as a MD voter (i know I need to change my residency) I am very happy.

Let me also point out that the surest way to undercut the ability of people to enact crappy laws is to stop electing them to position where they can put this garbage on the ballot. First, step accomplished.
I will also note that the road to the achievement of any civil right is necessarily long process because it requires a change in people’s hearts. The 16th Amendment was ratified in 1869, and 137 years later we just had a reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act because certain Southern States are still disenfranchising minority voters. Given that kind of history, that fact that Question 1 didn’t pass with a higher margin is remarkable.
None of this changes the fact that it sucks in the mean time. While I won’t even suggest for so much as a second that I can fathom how painful, how gut-wrenching it must be to have a place where you live enact laws designed to curb one’s civil rights, I’ll state unequivocally that the most important thing is to keep fighting, to keep our eyes on the prize, and to never cede so much as one inch of ground to those who would sheath our nation in laws built upon bigotry and fear.
