BREAKING NEWS: Iraq is Stable****
Once again you are rewarded for being a loyal reader of the Good Times Blog.Iraq is a stable country. That's right, it came straight out of the mouth of the First Lady.
Last night on Larry King Live Laura Bush said this about Iraq:
"And many parts of Iraq are stable now. But, of course, what we see on television is the one bombing a day that discourages everybody"
Just a couple of problems with that quote.
Number One: One bombing a day is too much. As I sit here typing they are flashing on CNN that a bomb in Ramadi just killed 18 kids playing soccer. Well Laura, at least now that the bombing du jour has happened were all safe for another 24 hours.
Oh except that leads me to point number 2. There is a lot more going on than one bombing a day:
So according to this figure (thanks to Thinkprogress.org) as of November 2006 there were on average 185 attacks a day by militias and insurgents. Ok, ill give it to Laura that not all of these attacks are technically "Bombings" so maybe she's right. Maybe back in October there were 184 snipings and only one bombing, and that's why the country is so stable.
But of course if you want to get technical there is of course this tidbit:
"The soccer field attack followed terrorist bombings in Baghdad at a popular ice cream shop, a parking lot and a restaurant that killed eight people and wounded 24 on Tuesday....
...
Tuesday's deadliest reported bombing took place in a popular ice cream shop in central Baghdad's mostly Shiite Karrada district. A suicide car bomber slammed into the shop, killing five people and wounding 10 others, according to an Interior Ministry official.
In the city's Tayaran Square, another bomber hid explosives inside a restaurant, where the blast killed two people and wounded eleven, the official said.
In a separate attack, Iraqi police said a car bomb blast Tuesday in a parking lot in the Karrada district killed one person and wounded three others."
Well that's definitely more than one a day.
So the truth is Iraq has gone to Shit. The next big question is how do Laura and George handle this?
BUSH:...we go to church. We exercise together, we watch movies together. We do all the other things that -- watch baseball on television, for instance -- that we both find relaxing.
KING: Do you -- do you talk about it a lot?
BUSH: We talk about it a lot. I mean, we live it.Enjoy your baseball Laura, in the meantime Iraq has turned into a shit sandwich
***Headline in no way implies that anyone in the reality based community actually believes Iraq is stable. In fact 9 out of 10 reality based community members agree that Britney Spears is more stable than Iraq*
*No they don't I made that up.

I saw that you scooped Jon Stewart - also - your post went up almost at the same moment that McConnell's testimony before the Senate was reported on NPR. He mentioned something along the lines of: 'Iraq is not safe.' and 'There are many multiple bombings on a daily basis.'

How many readers of The Good Times Blog have sat down and taken the time to talk with various soldiers who have spent time in Iraq to get their take on the situation over there? I have had the honor to do so as I have had both a family member as well as multiple friends over there at various points during this conflict. Sadly, I don't think our far left media outlets focus on many if any of the positives that have come about because of the sacrifices of our military. I know that it has been a long road thus far and it will be a long road ahead. I also know that at times it feels like we are in a quagmire but instead of the incessant Bush bashing, why don't you (the authors of the fabulous Good Times Blog) channel your energy to write a shout out to our men and women in uniform? I think all your readers (GOPers, Dems and Independents alike) will agree on that sentiment. I am proud of them and I know you are, too. Thanks.

Actually anonymous i have talked to MANY war veterans who have returned from Iraq. Working in Silver Spring I frequently encounter and talk to wounded vets from Walter Reed. You're tone seems to imply that none of us have ever fathomed to have a conversation with any military men, cuz well, were left-wing moonbats. I take offense to that.
I can say for a fact that these guys are the most amazing guys you would ever meet. Many of them barely escaped death and are still able to keep a positive look on life, often joking around with their buddies about their war wounds.
I can also tell you for a fact that many many of these guys would take issue, as I did, with the assertion that Laura Bush made, that its just the one bombing a day that is making Iraq a dangerous place. Many of these guys do not agree with the administrations policies towards the war.
You call it Bush Bashing, I call it pointing out the absurdity in the administrations attempt to make us believe all is going well in Iraq.
And PLEASE spare me this garbage about the far left media outlets. For every example you can give to prove this vast left wing media conspiracy I can return the favor with proof of a RIGHT wing conspiracy. On that note, as Gris Gris pointed out she heard Mitche McConnel discussing how there are "multiple bombings on a daily basis" and last time I checked that man had a big fat R after his name.

Anon - I have talked to many an Iraq (and Afghanistan) War vet AND their families, spouses and children. I guess I'm not talking to the same folks you are since they're not generally feeling that the positives outweigh the negatives. And please, please try to understand that there is, indeed, a distinct difference between supporting the troops and not supporting the President's policies. In my opinion, it is so short sighted to think otherwise.

I am confident that ALL of the people that read this great blog support the troops. Furthermore, I completely understand that there is a dfference between supporting the troops versus supporting the Bush administration's policies. Perhaps that's maybe why I thought, even though some of this blog's previous posts have been a bit politically-polarizing, "Hey, let's have a common ground and shoot for that (giving shout outs to the troops) instead." I apologize if anyone took offense to any portion of my previous entry.
That being said, I stand by my assertion that the media does NOT tell the whole story on Iraq and mostly focuses only on the tragedies and not progress that is being made by our good men and women and many of their Iraqi counterparts. Don't think that there aren't times that I am not disillusioned with the progress (or lack there of) in Iraq...as reported by the media. Just the opposite. However, I am certain that there is more to the story than the media portrays and relays to the American public.
Keep up the good work with your blog, Scooter and LuLu. I think discourse and learning about differing views is important. Though I get the impression and respect the fact that many of your readers are of the liberal viewpoint overall, I hope that the views of those of us who are more conservative overall can be equally represented and respected. We're not as close-minded as many Americans think. In fact, we're good people...just like you. Thanks for hearing me out.

Hey Anon,
Frank, honest, and respectful discussion IS the goal here. We appreciate all our readers. Left, Right, or purple. It is true, a strong majority of our readership (or at least the people who comment) are pretty liberal. But we welcome everyone's opinions. I like to consider our blog an opportunity to keep the back channels open. So thanks for being a reader, and thank you for expressing an opinion that you knew you might get flamed for. That's what we try to be about (that and secondhand celebrity gossip/offbeat news).
As for Iraq...I hope and pray everyday that somehow our government can come up with a plan to finish what we started and get our the men and women of our armed forces home safely. I also hope and pray that our government will come up with a better plan to take care of them once they come home.
Thanks for reminding me why I bother to post this damn thing. Even on the days when it is a pain in the ass, knowing that maybe Scooter or I will write something that makes somebody think or somebody speak out for what they believe in, actually makes it all worth it.
