Shocking Revelation by John McCain!

While speaking at a retirement community in South Carolina on Monday, John McCain had some not pretty things to say about Donald Rumsfeld's handling of the war in Iraq. McCain told the crowd of about 800 that "We are paying a very heavy price for the mismanagement-that's the kindest word I can give you-of Donald Rumsfeld, of this war...I think that Donald Rumsfeld will go down in history as one of the worst secretaries of defense in history."

Way to step up and point out the obvious John McCain. A little too late to make a difference in Iraq though, the damage there is pretty much done. I guess better late than never and this way it is "new material" when he uses it to fire up crowds at pre-primary campaign rallies!

Not so much the Fiery Maverick of late, is he? More a belated Captain Obvious Man…

Quite different from the comment he made in november about 'ole rummy:

"While Secretary Rumsfeld and I have had our differences, he deserves Americans' respect and gratitude for his many years of public service," McCain said last year when Rumsfeld stepped down"

Yeah well, then he went on to the Christian broadcasters conference and proceeded to discuss how he wants to overturn Rowe v. Wade.

You wonder if Rummy is "one of the worst" in history where he ranks Bob MacNamara or Melvin Laird. What with them structuring a policy that kept him in the Hanoi Hilton for 8 years.

Fun with ambiguity! You can still be "one of the worst" even if two guys are worse than you. Five years down, hopefully Rummy won't beat the record.

MacNamara gets bonus points for at least publicly showing some contrition 30 years after the fact. Better late than never. Something tells me Rumsfeld won't be publishing any mea culpas after he spends a few decades in obscurity.

I will say however that no one has yet written a song about Rummy asking if he is a member of the undead. Melvin Laird was the focus of just such an opus on Ed Sander's "Sanders' Truckstop" (1969).
